Rules for Shooting & Fishing

Licenses

Members and their guests must possess all required New Jersey State licenses in order to fish our ponds. Catch and release is required on all streams and ponds.

Hunting

All persons hunting must be properly licensed.  It is unlawful for any person age 10 or older to hunt without a hunting license.  All hunters must openly display their license or permit on their outer clothing and must show their license to any police officer or any person requesting to see it.

Licenses may be purchased from the Hudson Farm Pro Shop and NJ One Day License can be purchased from the club office (for bird hunting only).  A resident license from the guests home state is needed to issue a One Day License in New Jersey.

Hunter Education Courses

Hudson Farm has 4 Staff Members fully certified through NJ Fish & Game to conduct Hunter’s Education Courses at our location. We are certified to test for all 3 disciplines (Shotgun, Muzzleloader/Rifle & Archery). We ask that you contact the Club office directly (via email or phone) to schedule a day for you or a guest to come in to complete the course.

Guideline for the Hunter’s Education Course. This will enable you to purchase your NJ Hunting License or One Day NJ Hunting License at The Hudson Farm.

  • Go to www.huntercourse.com, register and note that you want New Jersey qualification, and then start the course. (Cost $24.95)
  • You will have to establish a user ID and password which will allow you to re-enter the site exactly where you left off.
  • Allow at least five and a half hours for the on-line course.
  • It is divided into eleven chapters with a quiz at the end of each.
  • You cannot speed up the course as each section requires your attention for a specific period of timeWhen you’ve finished, you’ll receive a CID# and a Voucher which you’ll need to buy the Field Permit.
  • You will need to email your voucher to Lamberson@griffinhowe.com or fax 973-398-3007
  • Once you’ve completed the Hunter’s On Line Education Course and have your Field Permit, email Lamberson@griffinhowe.com or call the Hudson Farm Office at 973-398-4330 to schedule an appointment
  • At Hudson Farm you’ll be able to take the 40 question multiple choice exam, basic knowledge (in addition, 20 questions per discipline you choose to test for)
  • After this exam, you’ll need to do a quick 1 on 1 gun skills test with one of the instructors
  • Upon finishing the gun handling review you’ll return to the Club Office and receive your Hunter Education Card with your CID # and course date.
  • You’ll need this card to buy a NJ hunting license or a One Day NJ License.

Commercial Shooting Preserve Licensed under N.J.S.A 23:3-29

Under a commercial pheasant, quail, mallard or partridge shooting preserve license, birds stocked may be taken by shooting only on lands in the application and license, without regard to sex and daily bag limit, by a properly licensed hunter between September 1 and the following May 1, both days inclusive.

All harvested game bird, including mallards, covered under the license must be tagged regardless of sex, including birds from the freezer and/or meat sales being transported or sold.

All persons hunting on a commercial preserve must possess a proper and valid hunting license.  A One Day New Jersey Hunting Licenses can be issued at the Office. Proof of having had a previous hunting license or hunter education certificate is required in order to issue a One Day New Jersey Hunting License.  Licenses must be filled with complete information. A pheasant or duck stamp is not required when hunting on a commercial hunting preserve which Hudson Farm possesses.

Shooting Rules

  • Break open guns only are permitted at Hudson Farm. Absolutely no pumps or automatics are allowed (No exceptions).  There are break open loaner guns at the Pro-shop, if needed. All loaner guns are to be signed out with the Griffin & Howe Shooting School.
  • Guns are to be unloaded and broken open at all times when not shooting.
  • Know the mechanical and firing characteristics of the firearm you use.
  • Eye and hearing protection is required at all times.
  • Whenever spent cartridges are seen on the ground members and guests are encouraged to pick up spent shells.
  • The use of cell phones is prohibited on the sporting clay courses or in the field.
  • If there are any questions on safety or how to handle a firearm contact the Griffin & Howe Shooting School.

Member’s Children & Junior Membership Guidelines

All member’s children while present on property take the responsibility of their parents membership and must obey all safety guidelines to shooting activities and treat all staff like family.

Member’s children 21 and over may come out and use the club facilities under club operating times.

All children can bring their own guests for clays (21 & over). If member’s children or guests have never shot before or need assistance they should book in with an instructor.

Member’s children 21 – 29 are permitted 1 walkup hunt per month (up to 3 guests max for walkup) All hunters must be appropriately licensed according to NJ State Law.

Deer hunting is permitted and guidelines for harvest will follow members big game rules and pricing.

Member’s children from the ages 30 – 35 will be offered a Junior Membership (1/2 User fee, full foundation) and will have full use of the membership privileges. At the age of 36 they will be invoiced full membership dues.

If they decide NOT to take Junior Membership, they can only come out as a guest of their parents (parents must be present) for all forms of shooting and activities on the property.

Shells

The Pro Shop has ample supply of 12, 16, 20, 28, and .410 gauge shells for sale.  Shells containing shot larger than No. 5 may not be used.

Shooting Lessons

The Club has full time shooting instructors available through Griffin & Howe Shooting School.  Lessons can be booked through the management or the shooting school office.

Sporting Clay Course

The Sporting Clay Course will be open to members and guests 7 days a week.  The club will send out an email notification for early closing on major holidays.  All controllers are to be picked up at the club office, ammo at the Pro Shop. Unless there are early snowfalls, the 30 clay stations will be open from April 15th to December 1st.

Griffin & Howe will retain the rights to host corporate events on Mondays only.  Should they require overnight guests, they will be accommodated in the Quail building.

Sporting Clay Rules

  • Guns are to be broken open when walking from stand to stand.
  • Only the person in the shooting station shall have a gun in his or her hand.
  • Guns are to be loaded only in the shooting stations with muzzles pointing in a safe direction.
  • Check barrels to be sure they are cleared of all obstructions.
  • Have the correct gauge shells for the gun that you are shooting.
  • When shooting sporting clays only clays are in season.  NO GAME MAY BE SHOT.
  • PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ANY SPORTING CLAY MACHINE.  If a machine is breaking clays, please notify the club office and they will take care of the problem.  These machines are extremely powerful and can cause serious injury. Please leave them for the staff to fix.
  • Notify management about all malfunctions with the course, such as empty machines or dead batteries, etc.
  • Please return all controllers to the office after shooting.
  • Pick up all empty hulls and trash and place them into the cedar buckets.
  • Eye and hearing protection is required at all times.  Baseball hats are recommended for falling clay debris at some stations.

Rifle Range

The Rifle Range is open throughout the year.  Members and their guests may use the rifle for target shooting with rifles and slug shotguns.  Flags are to be utilized when out at the handgun or rifle ranges. There is a sign out book in the club office which you must fill out before going out to the range.  A radio is also required to be taken with you.

Rifle Range Rules

  • When shooting at the rifle range, all members and guests must put up the orange chain and follow all rules that apply.
  • Start shooting from 50 yards if you are unsure of where your firearm is shooting.
  • Staple targets only in black area of the rubber mats, targets should NOT touch green borders.
  • Make sure no one is working or shooting beyond backstop.
  • Please pick up all empty cartridges.
  • Take home all used targets; please do not leave any garbage behind.

Field Etiquette & Safety Guidelines

  • All guns are to be unloaded and broken open in the parking lot, clubhouse or whenever walking on roads to and from hunting areas.
  • All people afield must have one article of proper orange clothing during the hunting season.  A 200 square inch minimum of blaze orange is a New Jersey State requirement.
  • Field attire will be shooting attire with tie for all shooters and non-shooting guests for all Continental Pheasant and Flighted Duck Shoots
  • No shot larger than #6 can be used in the field for upland game.  Larger shot can be used on waterfowl.
  • Nontoxic shot is required for all waterfowl hunting in New Jersey; Nontoxic shot includes steel, bismuth, tungsten-iron, tungsten-polymer, tungsten-matrix and tungsten-nickel iron.

Walkup Hunting Rules

  • A one-day New Jersey Hunting License costs $12.50.
  • Safeties must be on at all times for walkup hunting.
  • Muzzles must be pointing in a safe direction at all times.
  • No ground game.
  • Never shoot over anyone’s head.
  • Anyone who is in the field for walkup hunting should pick up their empty shells as well as others they might find.
  • Do not shoot across roads.
  • Break the gun open when crossing fences or streams.
  • If a situation ever arises that is potentially unsafe or questionable, Hudson Farm guides and handlers have complete authority and control in the field and will enforce our safety requirements.

Guides, Dogs & Kennels

Guides and dogs are available with a 48-hour prior notice with the management.  The club does not have kennel dogs for personal use. For members staying over in the clubhouse, there are 6 kennels provided in the kennel building.

Continental Pheasant & Flighted Duck Shoots

There will be 10-member weekends, two per month during the months of October – February for members.  These weekends will include a release shoot either on a Saturday or Sunday. Coffee and newspapers will be available at 7:00 AM next to the fire in the North Hall.  Breakfast will be served starting at 8:30am.

Shooting will begin at 9:30 AM and will end at about 1:00 PM.  A sit-down lunch will follow the shoot. Cleaned birds will be prepared for members to take home.

  • Guns must be in slips or cases while on hay wagon or in transit to and from shooting areas
  • Guns are to be unloaded and broken open in between shooting frames.
  • A bell will start and finish each shooting frame.
  • If birds are still in the air after the horn has blown, they are not to be shot.
  • Load guns only at pheasant pegs or in duck blinds.
  • All shots are to be taken from the pheasant peg or in the duck blind.
  • There should be a maximum of two people per peg or blind including non-shooters.
  • The sky must be in the background of your bird when shooting (45-degree angle or higher, No Low Shots).
  • No shooting at ground or cripple birds on land or in the water.  Handlers and dogs will retrieve all shot and crippled birds.
  • Shooting down the line or out of the blind is prohibited.
  • Be familiar with the gauge of your shotgun. Please make sure you use the proper gauge ammo.
  • Nontoxic shells are required for duck shoots.
  • Eye and hearing protection must be worn at all times.
  • If a shooter is unsure of anything, please ask a staff member before taking on any action.

Private Member Shoot

All private member shoots must be held during the week.  You must inform Heather Lamberson of your plans. In order that we don’t disappoint you, please schedule these events well in advance.  All other weekend shooting will be for members and their guests only. Please note that there will be two member shoots each month (October-February) with walk-ups the next day.

Again, please remember that “ALL” members and their guests will be required to have a valid State hunting license in their possession in order to partake in any live bird shooting event at the Farm. There will be no exceptions. Please don’t put the staff in an awkward position of having to disappoint you or your guest as it relates to this matter.

All duck shooting will end the first week of December.

All pheasant shooting will end of April.
